BRIDGING THE GENDER DIGITAL DIVIDE: International Girls in ICT Day

Today, on the 25th of April, 2024, we come together to celebrate International Girls in ICT Day, a day dedicated to recognizing and empowering girls and women in the field of technology. It’s a day to honor their achievements, foster their passion for innovation, and advocate for gender equality in the tech industry.

Empowering Girls in ICT

International Girls in ICT Day is a celebration of empowerment and opportunity. It serves as a platform to inspire girls around the globe to explore the vast possibilities within the ICT sector. From coding and programming to cybersecurity and artificial intelligence, ICT offers a myriad of exciting career paths waiting to be explored.

At its core, empowering girls in ICT means providing them with access to education, resources, and mentorship opportunities. It means breaking down barriers and challenging stereotypes that may discourage girls from pursuing careers in technology. By fostering a supportive and inclusive environment, we can unleash the full potential of girls and young women in the digital world.

Here at Digital Skills for Africa, we are dedicated to bringing together a diverse group of young girls, aspiring technologists, and industry leaders to celebrate the contributions of girls in the tech world.

In March 2024, the Digital Skills for Africa team in collaboration with our esteemed partners, the Ntha Foundation, Bien Corporation Africa, and SME Growth Lab hosted the Kwathu Upgrade: Leading Legacy – HerStory Edition workshop series under the Kwathu Upgrade Programme in celebration of Women’s History Month. Held at our Lilongwe headquarters, this week-long event empowered and equipped young female creatives, innovators, and entrepreneurs in Africa with essential skills across digital, entrepreneurial, creative, and advocacy domains.

Currently, we are on our final day of our WordPress workshop: How to set up a website (No code). This workshop was conducted both in-person (in Lilongwe, Malawi) and online; it aimed to equip participants with the knowledge and skills needed to create a professional website using WordPress, without any coding experience required.

On behalf of the Kwathu Kollective, we extend our warmest wishes to all girls and women in tech on this special day. Together, let us continue to inspire, support, and empower each other as we shape the future of technology.

Happy International Girls in ICT Day!
