This workshop will be conducted both in-person (at the Kwathu Kowork Hub, Mthuthama Roundabout, Area 3, Lilongwe, Malawi) and online; and it will equip you with the knowledge and skills needed to create a professional website using WordPress, without any coding experience required.

Location: Hybrid (Kwathu Kowork Hub in Lilongwe, Malawi, and Virtual sessions via Microsoft Teams)

Participants: 85 successful participants from 16 countries including Malawi, Botswana, Namibia, Nigeria, Algeria, Liberia, Ethiopia, Zambia, Mali, DR Congo, Ghana, Côte d’Ivoire, Tanzania, Kenya, Sierra Leone, Rwanda, and The Gambia.

Participation Requirements:

For participants attending remotely, we want to ensure your seamless participation. Please make sure you have access to a computer or mobile device, along with a stable internet connection or data bundle. Your connectivity will be essential for engaging fully in the workshop sessions and activities.

For those joining us in-house, please note that expenses related to your attendance are your responsibility. Additionally, we kindly request that you arrive at the venue 15 minutes prior to the scheduled start time. Overview:

The WordPress Workshop titled “How to Set Up a Website (No Code)” commenced on April 22nd, 2024, attracting a diverse group of 85 participants from across Africa. The workshop aimed to empower individuals with the skills needed to create a professional website without any prior coding knowledge. Hosted both physically at the Kwathu Kowork Hub in Lilongwe, Malawi, and virtually via Microsoft Teams, the workshop provided a unique hybrid learning experience, accommodating participants from various locations.

Day 1 Highlights:

1. WordPress Fundamentals

Time: 09:00 am – 10:30 am CAT / 07:00 am – 08:30 am GMT

Facilitator: Abigail Zingani

Participants explored WordPress basics with Abigail Zingani. They learned its importance and versatile features for successful website creation. They also went through the Predevelopment Planning process of website development

2. WordPress Installation and Configuration

Time: 10:30 am – 12:00 pm CAT / 08:30 am – 10:00 am GMT

Facilitator: Thokozani Kamkamba

Thokozani Kamkamba guided attendees through practical WordPress setup, covering installation and essential configurations on their hosting servers.

Day 1 saw the enthusiastic participation of 10 in-house attendees at the Kwathu Kowork Hub, while an additional 20+ participants joined online, creating a dynamic learning environment with diverse perspectives. 

Throughout the day, interactive sessions and live demonstrations facilitated an engaging learning experience, allowing participants to follow along with practical exercises. The collaborative atmosphere fostered knowledge sharing among participants, enabling them to exchange ideas and troubleshoot challenges collectively.

Looking Ahead:

As the workshop progresses over the next four days, participants can expect to delve deeper into WordPress functionality, explore advanced website customization techniques, and gain insights into effective content creation and management strategies. With a diverse cohort representing multiple countries and backgrounds, the workshop promises to be a rich learning experience, empowering participants to harness the power of WordPress in building impactful online platforms.

About the Author

Nthanda

Founder of Digital Skills for Africa (alongside other organisations and initiatives), Nthanda is a digital media specialist and a graduate student based in Michigan, USA – pursuing an MBA at Michigan State University – Eli Broad College of Business, specialising in Supply Chain Management and Business Analytics. She recently completed her Master of Science in Entrepreneurship, studying the entrepreneurial opportunities posited by Africa's Digital Transformation, and how Africans can better model Information Management Systems for Development. Her Bachelor of Social Science double-majoring Economics & Demography, specialised in the socio-economic impacts of Women's Empowerment. Nthanda teaches Digital Media, Marketing, and Analytics.
